Humble, Not Weak

Reflections for contemplative living.

Humility can be an elusive gift because we see it as being weak or meek. But once we understand and dare to open this gift, we can see its beauty.

Many of us see a humble person as someone afraid of their own shadow, whose self-image is so low they’re afraid to stand up for themselves. But humility is simply a clear recognition of what and who we are.

As I grow in humility I learn to “right size” my ego. I also understand that I’m beloved because God created me. This plants me firmly in the middle ground between the extremes of grandiosity and intense shame. I start living out my sincere desire to be and become the best that I can be.

Lord, thank you for making me remember that humility is not being weak. It’s being me and staying my “right size”.
