Becoming Happy

Reflections for contemplative living

Joy and rules are not usually concepts that we place together.  We usually associate rules with the carrying out of duty and responsibility or laying down the law and establishing order and discipline. But all of this seems opposed to joy.

Happiness refers to a state of mind where an individual feels joyous, content, and satisfied. This positive emotional state can be impacted by external events or personal experiences, but studies show that it is largely influenced by internal factors like behavior and mindset. One can promote happiness by building positive habits and engaging in activities that promote a joyful mindset. For example, expressing gratitude, spending time with loved ones, and pursuing hobbies can boost one’s overall sense of well-being and happiness.

We find joy in God alone, for our souls have been wired for God. We must acquire God if we are to be joyful. But here’s the trick—and the whole of the Christian life is on display here: God is love. God is self-emptying on behalf of the other. But this means, paradoxically, that to acquire God is to make oneself a gift. To have God is to be what God is—and that means giving one’s life away. That alone will make you joyful.

When we accept the commandment to love one another as God loves us, we walk the path of joy. When we internalize this law, we become happy.

Thank you, Lord, for helping me see that Your rules are here for me to learn and grow in love.
